In recent months, my Frontier has developed a whining
sound that continues to get louder and louder. The
engine runs fine other than a small bit of up and down
idle speed movement at initial start up when it is
cold that it did not do before. The sound is like a
the whining you hear from a supercharger. My mechanic
says that he thinks it's internal.

Anyone experienced this before?

..

It would seem to me to be a timing Belt/chain.
Or a timing chain/belt guide. Did they use an engine stethoscope to find where the sound was coming from?

Good Luck.. Don S..

Thank you for your reply.

I have not used a stethoscope but a length of hose
would work for that, I believe. It sounds mostly like
it is coming from the timing chain cover where it
spins the cams but it also sounds a little bit like
it's farther back on that left side head.

What exactly is happening where a metal chain could
make a whining sound? Is that a known sound for a
timing chain or guide issue?

Hawg,

There is a documented issue with the Timeing Chain
Guide's during the year's from '05-'10, with the 4
Liter's.

From your description it sound's like that may be the
issue.

If it were mine,, I would take it to Nissan and have
them diagnose it. Get there estimate for repair and
decide what to do then.

Seem's like they extended the warranty for this issue.
You can do a Google search and see if the warranty has
been extended, just in case that is what they diagnose.

Might wind up being just a bearing going out in the
Belt Tensioner or somewhere else.

Good Luck,
